Hindustani Community: Advocating for Hindustani Youth

Advocating for Advocating for Hindustani Youth

As a Hindustani youth born in the Netherlands, I raise my voice to address the unique challenges that modern Hindustani youth face within our community.

Growing up between two cultures—our Hindustani heritage and Dutch society—presents both opportunities and difficulties that often go unspoken. One common issue is the performance pressure many of us experience, especially around academic achievement.

A significant impact

In our culture, there is a strong emphasis on always scoring high grades and excelling in school. While rooted in values of hard work and success, this pressure can lead to anxiety and the fear of failure, as we are constantly expected to meet high standards.

This is what I have observed amongst many Hindustani Youth. High expectations given by society or our parents may be well-intentioned. However, it  can have a significant impact on our mental and emotional well-being.

Let's create space for discussion

I believe it’s essential for us to address these pressures, and I am committed to supporting my fellow Hindustani youth to speak up about this. I frequently talk about issues & successes amongst hindustani youth  at community events, advocating for open dialogue on these topics.

By creating spaces for discussion, we can foster a healthier balance between pursuing success and maintaining our mental health, ensuring that we thrive both as individuals and as a community.

How to support?

Here are some ways to actively support Hindustani youth and advocate for their well-being:

Raise awareness at community events: I speak up about the challenges Hindustani youth face, such as performance pressure, and encourage open discussions within the community.

Create spaces for open dialogue: By organizing and participating in events or forums, I provide platforms where young people can share their experiences and concerns without fear of judgment.

Promote mental health awareness: I emphasize the importance of mental and emotional well-being, advocating for a balance between academic success and self-care.

Encourage peer support: I foster connections among Hindustani youth, promoting a sense of community where we support each other in managing cultural and societal expectations.

Advocate for realistic expectations: I challenge the idea that success is solely defined by academic achievement, encouraging a more holistic approach to personal growth and fulfillment.

Engage with families and elders: I work to bridge the gap between generations, helping parents and elders understand the pressures young people face today, and encouraging more supportive and understanding family dynamics.
