Advocating for Permanent Residence
My brother and I are advocating for family reunification for Surinamese elders (gezinshereniging). We began our journey by starting a petition to raise awareness about the need for policy changes, allowing Surinamese elders to reunite with their families in the Netherlands permanently.
This issue is deeply personal, affecting many families.Currently, Surinamese elders can only stay temporarily with their children in the Netherlands, despite the country’s colonial history with Suriname and the strong familial ties that remain.
After Suriname’s independence, many families migrated to the Netherlands, but restrictive policies now prevent elders from living with their loved ones in their final years.
We presented our petition to prominent Dutch politicians, hoping for concrete action to allow these elders, who contributed so much to both countries, to live close to their families with dignity and care. This is not just a policy issue; it’s about recognizing the shared history between the Netherlands and Suriname.
